About Irish Heritage Trail

Irish Heritage Trail – Bytown, Ottawa, and the Valley

People. Places. Memory.

The Irish Heritage Trail – Bytown, Ottawa, and the Valley is a place-based heritage initiative dedicated to telling the story of Irish and Irish-Canadian life through the people, places, and moments that shaped this region and Canada itself.

From early settlement and canal construction to Black 1847, and through generations of immigration, labour, faith, and community building, Irish history is deeply woven into the fabric of Bytown, Ottawa, and the Ottawa Valley. This Trail brings that history out of archives and into public space, where it can be seen, walked, read, and remembered.

A Living Trail of Stories

The Trail connects sites, buildings, landscapes, and neighbourhoods with the lives of the people who shaped them. Through historical research, storytelling, plaques, and interpretive markers, the Trail highlights:

  • Individuals and families
  • Places of work, worship, and gathering
  • Moments of hardship, resilience, and contribution
  • The ongoing presence of Irish heritage in contemporary Canada

This is not just a look back, it is a living record, built with care and grounded in evidence.

Working With Descendants and Communities

At the heart of the Trail are the stories of real people, preserved in partnership with descendants and local communities. Family histories, oral traditions, and lived experience are welcomed, documented, and respectfully interpreted alongside historical records.

Our approach is guided by accuracy, transparency, and long-term stewardship, ensuring that stories are shared responsibly and preserved for future generations.

A Pilot With a National Vision

The Irish Heritage Trail – Bytown, Ottawa, and the Valley serves as the founding pilot for a broader initiative. Its role is to host, coordinate, and develop the framework that will allow other communities across Canada to add their own sites and stories.

The Trail looks to establish a local framework and ideally link to a future Pan-Canadian Irish Heritage Trail, connecting local histories into a shared national narrative.
